What You Need to Know About Sleep and Weight Gain

Can a lack of sleep cause you to gain weight? It’s entirely possible that those extra pounds you carry might just be a product of not getting a good night’s sleep. Here is what you need to know about sleep and weight gain.

“It’s not so much that if you sleep, you will lose weight, but if you are sleep-deprived, meaning that you are not getting enough minutes of sleep or good quality sleep, your metabolism will not function properly,” Michael Breus, Ph.D., Clinical director of the sleep division for Arrowhead Health in Glendale, Ariz.

The key phrase here is “good quality sleep.” It’s not enough to put in extra hours. You need to sleep through the night without disruption, and awake feeling rested and refreshed

The Relationship Between Sleeping and Eating

Each night while you sleep your body produces two hormones that regulate appetite. One tells your body you are hungry and the other says “Stop, you’ve had enough.” When you are sleep deprived, your body creates more of the first and less of the second. Consequently, you won’t feel full or satisfied after eating, and then you crave more food. This craving leads to overeating and often results in unwanted pounds.

“On average, we need about 7.5 hours of quality sleep per night, he says. “If you are getting this already, another half hour will not help you lose 10 pounds, but if you are a five-hour sleeper and start to sleep for seven hours a night, you will start dropping weight.” Michael Breus, Ph.D., Clinical director of the sleep division for Arrowhead Health in Glendale, Ariz.

Both of these hormones also play a part in how well your metabolism functions. Not only do they regulate the amount of fuel you consume, but they also tell your body how to process it. So, an imbalance produces a two-fold effect that further complicates the problem.

As you can see, in order to regulate your hormone production you must get a good night’s sleep.

How Can You Get a Good Night’s Sleep?

Many things can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. New parents, in particular, struggle with sleep deprivation.
